Safe Passage! Hibbert, Seville among 6 Jamaicans to Advance in World Athletic Championships

Jaydon Hibbert and Oblique Seville were two of the most impressive Jamaican performers to advance from their preliminary phase of competition during the evening session on the opening day of the 19th World Athletics Championships Budapest 23 on Saturday.

Men’s | Triple Jump – Jaydon Hibbert (Jamaica 🇯🇲)

Held inside the National Athletics Centre in Budapest, the 18-year-old Hibbert led 12 men into Monday morning’s triple jump final when he landed at 17.70m in Group B. The World number five ranked athlete was the only one to have surpassed the 17.15m qualifying performance.

He opened with a 16.99m jump before his 17.70m mark on his second attempt and has now sent an ominous warning to all rivals in the hunt for medals.

Men’s | 100 Meter – Forde, Seville & Watson (Jamaica 🇯🇲)

All three men in the 100m heats, Ryiem Forde, Oblique Seville and Rohan Watson all made easy progress to the semi-finals slated for Sunday.

Forde finished second in Heat One in 10.01 seconds behind Great Britain’s Zharnel Hughes (10.00 seconds).

Seville won Heat Five in a personal best 9.86 seconds, beating American Fred Kerley who was second in 9.99 seconds.

In Heat Six, Watson (20.22 seconds) was second to Japan’s Abdul Sani Brown in a season’s best 10/07 seconds.

The men’s semi-finals are set to start at 10:35 am with the final scheduled for 1:10 pm.

Watson is drawn in lane eight in Heat One; Forde goes from lane six in Heat Two and Seville runs from lane seven in Heat Three.

The top two from each semi-final plus the two fastest times qualify for the final.

Men’s | Discus Throw – Smikle, Stona & Dacres (Jamaica 🇯🇲)

Smikle threw 65.71m for third place in Group A in the men’s discus, while his compatriot Roje Stona finished in ninth place with 62.67m.

Smikle got his qualifying mark on his first throw and followed up with 64.32m and 64.30 m, respectively, while Stona’s series was 62.67, a foul and 61.69m.

Meanwhile, Dacres finished fourth in Group B with 65.45m after starting with a foul throw. He then registered 64.72m and then his 65.45m.

The final is slated for Monday morning.
