A JROTC event was marred by tragedy over the weekend when a teen succumbed to cardiac arrest.
The incident occurred during a 5K run held at Everglades High School in Miramar.
Emergency response to teen’s distress
Reports are that the Miramar Police were alerted to a medical emergency at the high school at approximately 9 a.m.
Upon their arrival, they discovered the 14-year-old suffering from cardiac arrest after running the 5K.
It is reported that Miramar Fire Rescue responded to the scene and transported him to Memorial Miramar where he was later pronounced dead.
His identity has not been disclosed by police. However, a GoFundMe organized for his family identified him as Knox MacEwen, a student at Western High School in Davie.
School and community mourning
The news of MacEwen’s untimely passing has deeply affected the community. Western High School’s Principal, Jimmy Arrojo, addressed the tragic event with a heartfelt message to students, families, and staff, expressing profound condolences.
He has called upon the community to provide support through thoughts and prayers for the bereaved family.
Arrojo further shared that the school administration has organized grief counseling services to assist students and staff in coping with the loss.
