PARIS, France — Jamaica’s Roje Stona created history at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games when he shocked the world with an Olympic Games record of 70.0m to win the men’s discus inside the Stade de France moments ago.
Stona, one of three Jamaicans in the 12-man-final, beat Lithuania’s Mykolas Alekna with 69.97m. Third place went to Austria’s Matthew Denny with 69.31m.
Coincidentally, Alekna had established a new Olympic Record with his 69.97m, only Stona’s heroic effort to surpass the short-lived mark.
Ralsford Mullings threw 65.61m for ninth place, with fellow Jamaican Traves Smikle taking 10th place with 64.97m.
Roje Stona’s gold medal, the first in the event for Jamaica, has pushed the nation’s tally to five, an unprecedented four of which have come in the field events. He is coached by triple Olympic shot put champion Ryan Crouser, who also specializes in the discus event.
Rajindra Campbell won bronze in the shot put, Shanieka Ricketts won silver in the triple jump and Wayne Pinnock secured silver in the long jump. Kishane Thomspon secured the country’s only track medal so far, with silver in the men’s 100m.
