Jamaican born Veterinarian Carlton Gyles receives Order of Canada

Jamaica born Veterinarian Dr. Carlton Gyles, has been appointed to the Order of Canada for his outstanding contribution to veterinary pathology.

According to the University of Guelph, Dr. Gyles is a distinguished professor of veterinary pathology who has made significant contributions to understanding how E. coli causes disease in both animals and humans. The university describes him as one of the world’s leading authorities on this topic.

His expertise extends beyond research, as he is also recognized for his advocacy for science and his role as a trusted advisor. Dr. Gyles continues to provide leadership in the Canadian Research Network on Bacterial Diseases of Swine and the Canadian Research Institute for Food Safety, demonstrating his ongoing influence in these important fields.

In 2021, Dr. Gyles was honored with the prestigious Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) President’s Award in recognition of his tireless contributions to veterinary medicine.

Dr. Gyles attended Clarendon College in Jamaica before migrating to Canada. He graduated from the OVC in 1964 and earned a PhD in the UK and Denmark in 1968. He joined the OVC faculty the following year, where he taught students and conducted research for 36 years. He’s also held roles like chair, dean of graduate students and interim dean of the OVC.

Gyles represented veterinary medicine as a founding Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences in 2005 and served on the board for years. He was the editor-in-chief of the Canadian Veterinary Journal from 2008 to 2020.

Established in 1967 by Queen Elizabeth II, the Order of Canada is the cornerstone of the Canadian honors system and recognizes outstanding achievement, dedication to the community, and service to the nation.
