Barbados has experienced a significant boost in tourism, with a 10% increase in stay-over arrivals for 2024, according to the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association (BHTA). In his New Year’s Day message, BHTA Chairman Javon Griffith expressed gratitude to investors for their continued confidence in the island’s potential as a top luxury destination in the Caribbean.
From January to November 2024, Barbados welcomed 617,228 stay-over visitors, up from 559,701 during the same period in 2023, as reported by the Barbados Statistical Service (BSS). This increase highlights the growing appeal of the island as a premier destination for travelers.
The growth in Barbados’ tourism sector has been largely fueled by a remarkable surge in visitors from the United States. Chairman Javon Griffith highlighted that between January and November 2024, the U.S. market alone accounted for 201,005 visitors, a significant rise from 157,023 during the same period in 2023. This represents a 28% increase in North American arrivals.
Griffith emphasized that this growth is having a positive ripple effect across all sectors of the tourism industry. “The impact is being felt in every corner of the industry, from restaurants to car rental agencies, from surf instructors to taxi drivers, from villa management companies to hotels, and from beach vendors to merchants in Bridgetown,” he stated.
The surge in U.S. tourism to Barbados has been largely driven by the return of several major airlines to the island. Chairman Javon Griffith credited American Airlines’ resumed flights from New York-JFK and Philadelphia, Delta Airlines’ return from Atlanta and New York-JFK, and the introduction of Frontier Airlines from San Juan. Additionally, United Airlines has increased its flights from Newark-EWR, JetBlue from Boston, and American Airlines from Charlotte, all contributing to the growth.
Looking ahead to 2025, Griffith expressed excitement about the continued expansion of Barbados’ tourism industry. “2025 promises to be an exciting year on many fronts, and I look forward to the many months ahead with a great sense of optimism,” he said. He pointed to ongoing tourism investments, including the development of InterContinental Hotels Group’s Hotel Indigo and the Blue Monkey Beach Club. Griffith also highlighted the anticipated transformation of Marriott properties, with the introduction of the Autograph Collection (Waves Hotel and Spa, Treasure Beach, Tamarind, and The House), the Luxury Collection (Colony Club), and the Tribute Portfolio (Crystal Cove and Turtle Beach) in 2026.
Chairman Javon Griffith expressed confidence in a strong performance for the summer of 2025, as both American Airlines and Delta Airlines are set to provide an additional 10,000 seats to Barbados each month. This boost in airlift is expected to further drive tourism growth on the island.
Griffith also highlighted the importance of continued collaboration with local, regional, and international partners, particularly the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI), which has been a key player in the sector’s recovery. “I have high praises for our tourism partners, who have been integral to our successful navigation of these choppy post-COVID-19 seas; and because of this united front, we are seeing encouraging signs that the sector is fully back on its feet,” he said.
