Alick Athanaze’s brilliant 99 propels West Indies to strong position against Shaheens

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — With a masterful 99-run innings, middle-order batter Alick Athanaze orchestrated a commanding start for the West Indies on the opening day of their three-day tour match against the Pakistan Shaheens at the Islamabad Club Ground.

The practice match sets the stage for the highly anticipated two-match Test series between the teams, scheduled to commence on January 19.

Strong start by West Indies openers

Winning the toss and opting to bat, the West Indies began their innings with a solid 47-run partnership between captain Kraigg Brathwaite and opener Mikyle Louis. Brathwaite took on the role of aggressor, smashing five fours and a six in his brisk 34 off 39 balls before becoming the first casualty of the day.

Louis, more cautious in his approach, contributed a steady 34 off 63 deliveries and, alongside Keacy Carty (22 off 46 balls), formed a vital 42-run stand for the second wicket. However, the visitors suffered a double setback when Mohammad Rameez Jnr dismissed both batters in quick succession, leaving the team precariously placed at 90/3.

Athanaze’s stellar knock anchors the innings

Entering at number five, Athanaze showcased exceptional composure and skill, rescuing the West Indies with his sublime knock. The left-handed batter built crucial partnerships with Kavem Hodge (17), Justin Greaves (5), and Tevin Imlach (13), steering the innings away from potential collapse.

His majestic 99 off 142 balls featured 15 dazzling boundaries and a towering six, displaying both precision and aggression. Athanaze’s dream of a century, however, was dashed when Ahmed Safi Abdullah trapped him just one run short of the milestone.

Late resistance by Jangoo and de Silva

As the day drew to a close, Amir Jangoo and wicketkeeper-batter Joshua de Silva ensured there were no further setbacks, adding an unbeaten 26-run partnership for the eighth wicket. Jangoo remained unbeaten on 29, with de Silva supporting him on 11, as the West Indies reached a respectable 273/7 at stumps.

For the Pakistan Shaheens, Mohammad Rameez Jnr emerged as the standout bowler, claiming three wickets for just 40 runs. Ahmed Safi Abdullah chipped in with two wickets, while Hussain Talat added one to the tally.

The practice match serves as a critical warm-up for both sides ahead of the Test series. With momentum tilting toward the visitors after a dominant first day, the remaining two days will test the resolve and adaptability of both squads.
