A woman died in a house fire in Deerfield Beach on Thursday morning, and the Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire Rescue is investigating the incident as “suspicious in nature.” Firefighters responded to the scene at Northwest 43rd Street and Northwest 4th Avenue around 4:30 a.m., where they found heavy smoke and flames coming from one side of the duplex, according to Battalion Chief Michael Kane.
As firefighters worked to control the flames, they discovered the victim deceased in a back bedroom, according to Kane. While the victim’s identity has not been released, reports indicate that the victim was a woman.
The family living next to the unit that caught fire was able to escape safely, and the fire was extinguished within about 20 minutes. Additionally, a dog was rescued from the blaze and later reunited with its family members.
Kane said the cause of the fire remains under investigation but is considered “suspicious.”
“At this time, the fire is considered suspicious in nature, but the cause of the fire is not being released at this time,” Kane said.
