MANAGUA, NICARAGUA – Jamaica’s U20 Reggae Girlz launched their CONCACAF Women’s U20 Qualifiers campaign in stunning fashion, delivering a clinical 7-0 dismantling of St. Vincent and the Grenadines at the National Football Stadium in Managua on Thursday.
A blistering first-half performance saw the young Jamaicans rack up six goals before halftime, with Alyssa Stephenson leading the charge with a hat-trick (14th, 45th, 59th). Avery Johnson (24th), Maya Raghunandanan (28th), Jaileah McPherson (41st), and Andrene Smith (44th) also etched their names onto the scoresheet in what was an electrifying attacking display.
Early signs of brilliance
Jamaica wasted no time asserting their dominance, controlling possession and pressing high from the opening whistle. The first glimpse of danger came courtesy of Una Lue, who weaved her way down the right flank with dazzling footwork, muscling past one defender before effortlessly gliding past another. Her resulting shot seemed destined for the top corner, but Vincentian goalkeeper G-Riesa Joseph made a spectacular fingertip save to deny the early breakthrough.
However, it wasn’t long before the Girlz found the opener. Stephenson’s raw pace proved too much for the opposing defense, as she burst through the backline and coolly slotted the ball into the near post.
A barrage of first-half goals
With momentum firmly in their grasp, Jamaica continued their relentless assault. Avery Johnson then doubled the lead, showcasing superb individual skill as she skipped past a defender and rifled a shot past the goalkeeper from the edge of the box.
The floodgates had officially opened as shortly after the second goal, Raghunandanan added to the tally, expertly spinning away from her marker before sending a low-driven shot through a sea of defenders into the back of the net.
The onslaught continued when captain Jaileah McPherson stepped up for a free kick and unleashed a thunderous strike into the roof of the net, leaving the Vincentian goalkeeper with no chance. Smith made it 5-0, poking home from close range before Stephenson struck again in first-half stoppage time, ensuring Jamaica entered the break with a jaw-dropping 6-0 advantage.
A slower second half, but the job was done
With the game effectively won, Jamaica eased off the gas in the second half. Their only goal after the break came in the 59th minute, as Stephenson completed her hat-trick, capping off a dazzling personal performance.
Despite a more controlled and measured approach in the final 30 minutes, the Reggae Girlz never looked threatened as they comfortably saw out the remainder of the match to secure a perfect start in Group A.
Eyes on St. Kitts and Nicaragua
The Reggae Girlz will now turn their attention to Saturday’s clash against St. Kitts and Nevis before closing out the group stage against host nation Nicaragua on Monday.
Meanwhile, in the other Group A fixture, Nicaragua made an emphatic statement of their own, dismantling St. Kitts and Nevis 8-0, positioning themselves atop the table on goal difference.
The road to the U20 Women’s World Cup
With only the group winners advancing to join powerhouses USA and Mexico in the CONCACAF Women’s U20 Championship, Jamaica will need to continue their ruthless form to secure a ticket to the final qualifying round—where a coveted place at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup will be on the line.
If Thursday’s performance is any indication, the U20 Reggae Girlz are more than ready to rise to the occasion.
