Now for the news in the detail
In Broward County, a massive COVID-19 vaccination effort is now underway. Health officials are administering the shot to residents over 65 years old, either through a regular medical visit or at a drive-thru site. The online portal for vaccine appointments was launched last week but technical difficulties had prevented residents from scheduling dates. The portal was reopened on Sunday and some 26,000 appointments were made as of Monday morning. Mayor of Broward, Steve Geller announced that more vaccination sites will be open soon.
Now for Caribbean News,
In Jamaica, tributes have rolled in for hotel giant, Gordon “Butch” Stewart. The renowned Jamaican businessman died on January 4 in Miami after battling an undisclosed illness. Stewart was the founder of Sandals and Beaches Resort, the Jamaica Observer and the ATL Group. His son Adam, the current CEO of the ATL Group, hailed his father as a “dreamer”, while Prime Minister Andrew Holness said that Butch Stewart was one of the most innovative entrepreneurs Jamaica had ever seen. Stewart, who was 79 years old, is survived by his wife Cheryl and seven children.
And in Barbados,
British actress Zara Holland is to appear in court today on charges of breaching COVID-19 regulations. Holland, best known for her role on the British reality show, Love Island, arrived in Barbados on December 27 with her boyfriend. The pair were tested and placed in quarantine at a hotel, but later fled the property without permission. They were intercepted at the Grantley Adams International airport, while attempting to leave the island. She was served with a summons related to the offense last weekend.
