Today’s newscast is brought to you by the Florida Department of Health;

To help stop the spread of COVID-19, The Florida Department of Health in Broward County reminds everyone to practice social distancing, wash your hands often with soap and water and cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or sleeve when coughing or sneezing.

Now for the news in the detail

Last week Thursday, President Joe Biden signed a $1.9 trillion Covid relief package for Americans. The landmark legislation directs the Treasury to send direct payments of up to $1,400 to most Americans who filed a 2019 or 2020 tax return. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) began processing the stimulus checks on Friday and many Americans have already received their payments. This is the third coronavirus relief bill since the pandemic began a year ago.

Now for Caribbean News,

Jamaicans at home and in the diaspora have until March 31, to submit nominations for the Jamaica National Honors and Awards for this year. The nomination forms and guidelines are available online through the Office of the Prime Minister in Jamaica or the overseas locations of the Jamaican Foreign Missions. Jamaica’s national Honors and Awards are administered by the government to recognize those who have made significant contributions to the development of Jamaica. Among last year’s recipients were Lauderdale Lakes Mayor Hazelle Rogers, Third World drummer Willie Stewart and longtime Miami resident, Cedella Marley.

Also in Jamaica,

Legendary Reggae band Toots and the Maytals won Best Reggae Album at the 2021 Grammy Awards. The virtual awards show took place on Sunday, March 14. The Got to Be Tough album was released just days before the death of Toots Hibbert, the band’s frontman, who died on September 11, 2020.  This marks the second Grammy win for the band after they won Best Reggae Album in 2004. The band beat out Skip Marley, The Wailers, Buju Blanton and Maxi Priest for the award this year.

And in Antigua and Barbuda, the health ministry announced that as of Friday, it had vaccinated some 25 percent of the country’s adult population. Since Antigua’s vaccine rollout started on March 2nd, over 23,000 residents have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 AstraZeneca vaccine. Those inoculated include healthcare workers, senior residents, teachers, law enforcement officers and other frontline workers. The country’s health ministry said that Friday marked the completion of the first phase of the vaccination campaign. Public vaccination has now been suspended pending the arrival of additional vaccines.
