Trinidad’s Customs and Excise Division Tuesday said it had intercepted an estimated eight million dollars (One TT dollar=US$0.16 cents) worth of marijuana at its main port in Port of Spain. It is believed the container originated from Ontario in Canada.
In a statement, the division said the drugs were found at a transit shed on the port on Monday while officers were conducting a routine examination of imported cargo when they discovered the 28.88 kilograms of the drug with a street value of TT$8.66 million.
Customs said the cargo consisted of 18 packets wrapped in black plastic and concealed in a false compartment of a large wooden crate.
The authorities said they had also seized marijuana with a street value of TT$72,000 at TTPost after officers had examined cargo imported from Canada.
The Customs and Excise Division said in the statement investigations are continuing and arrests are imminent in both matters.
