As Jamaica gears up to celebrate Emancipation Day (August 1) and Independence Day (August 6), the Consulate General of Jamaica, Miami in association with the Jamaica Diaspora Southern USA (JADIAS) have scheduled a full week of activities for Jamaicans living in Florida that want to take part in the festivities.
Below is the full list of activities for “Emanci-Pendence” Week:
JAMAICA INDEPENDENCE WEEK
(Aug. 1 – Aug. 8)
August 1. FESTIVAL SONG CELEBRATION – Event to start the Week
highlighting the current Festival Song winners and beyond.
August 2. JAMAICA 58 – SERVICE OF THANKSGIVING
Ecumenical Church Service – saluting the 58th anniversary through prayer and worship (hosted by Consulate staff )
August 3. JAMAICA OPEN FOR BUSINESS (Business Segment). This will include a team of panelists from the following companies who have agreed to discuss the current Jamaican economic environment through investment opportunities in varied industries and the Stock Market; and partnering with JA entities including
JAMPRO| MICAF | MFAFT |JAUSA Chamber Commerce.
August 4. DIASPORA STATE CHALLENGE – Competitive edu-tainment involving the Diaspora groups across the Southern USA highlighting information on Jamaican heritage and topical matters. Supporting donations will go towards JA charity of choice by the winning group.
August 5. ‘COOKING IS GREAT FOR FESTIVAL 58”
Diaspora Cook-Off & Health Segment (to include message/healthy cook)
segment exploring indigenous and fusion tastes with local ingredients/exercise
segment through dance
August 6. STORYTELLING – Tribute to Miss Lou (cultural presentations)
Continuing celebration of Miss Lou (centennial) birthday.
August 7. Highlighting work of ICONS in the Arts
NDTC | Oliver Samuels | Perry Henzell | Olive Lwin – Jamaica Folk Singers |moderated by local theater and literary experts.
August 8. JAMAICA DIASPORA DAY OF PRAYER (JDOP)
The week will culminate with Diaspora community participating in JDOP conducted by Jamaican faith-based leaders with donations to benefit Jamaican home-grown charities.
