CHAMPS UPDATE: KC open 30-point lead… as Edwin Allen, Hydel battle royale continues

Defending champions Kingston College has extended their lead in the race to retain their title, while Edwin Allen High School has regained the lead entering Saturday’s final day of the 2023 ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships.

Kingston College (KC) who assumed a narrow three-point lead (124-121) over nearest rival Jamaica College (JC) after Thursday’s third day of the five-day competition, increased that lead to 30 points (190 to 160), allied with strong performances in Friday’s qualifiers ahead of Saturday’s finals.

Calabar High School sits in third place on 95 points, followed by St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) on 54, with St Jago High School rounding out the top five with 37 points.

On the girls’ side, Edwin Allen High School holds a narrow 7.5-point lead (147 to 139.5) over Hydel High, with Holmwood Technical High School in third place on 99, followed by St Jago High on 89 and Immaculate Conception High School rounding out the top-five on 48 points.

In field events on Friday, Jade-Ann Dawkins of St Jago won the Class One triple jump gold medal with a leap of 13.20m ahead of Celine Riddle of Holmwood Technical with 12.88m. The bronze medal was won by STEHTS’s Richelle Stanley with 12.37m.

In the boys’ equivalent, Trevon Hamer of JC won with 15.61m, with the silver medal going to Javar Thomas of KC with 15.37m, and Kesean Rhooms of Cornwall College getting third place with 14.50m.

The girls’ Class Three discus throw was won by Jessica Thompson of St Jago with 38.0m. Excelsior High’s Kayla Honeywell claimed the silver medal with 35.5m and Brandane Malcom of Hydel claiming the bronze medal with 34.25m.

In the girls’ Class One high jump, Torian Caven of Vere Technical leapt to a personal best 1.82m to win gold head of Edwin Allen’s Rasheda Samuels, who also posted a lifetime best 1.79m with Richelle Stanley following up her bronze medal in the triple jump, with another bronze in the high jump.

Caven also won the Class Two high jump gold last year.

In Class Four, Gabrilla Treasure of St Catherine High win with 1.55m, ahead of Stefvanco Henry of Campion College with the same height. Third place went to Adajah Drysdale of Wolmer’s Girls’ School with 1.50m.

Edwin Allen claimed gold and silver in the girls’ Class Two discus with Dionjah Shaw winning with 46.27m and Shamoyea Morris throwing 44.95m for second.

Third place went to Clarendon College’s Marla-Kay Lampart with 43.15m.

Kingston College won silver and bronze in the pole vault Open through Isaiah Patrick and Courtney Hanchard with3.90m and 3.60m, respectively. The event was won by Wolmer’s Boys’ Daniel Campbell with 4.20m.

Amani Phillips of Kingston College won the Class Three long jump gold medal with 6.53m ahead of Michael Graham of Excelsior High School with 6.33m and Calabar High School’s Richard Green with 6.25m.

On the track, Kaydeen Johnson of Hydel won the girls’ 2000m steeplechase Open in 7:15.01 minutes, comfortably ahead of Holmwood’s Terrica Clarke (7:17.04) and Edwin Allen’s Sanyae Gibson (7:27.51).

The boys’ equivalent saw Ainsley Campbell of KC winning in 6:13.57 minutes. JC’s Nellie Ambriton was second in 6:18.56 and Adriano Brown of Calabar third in 6:22.33 minutes.

Hydel finished first and third in the girls’ 400m hurdles final with defending champion and team captain Oneika McAnnuff retaining her title with a 56.46-second win. Her teammate Alliah Baker claimed bronze in 58.37 seconds, while Edwin Allen’s Tonyan Beckford won the silver medal in 57.14 seconds.

The boys’ Class Two 400m hurdles resulted in JC’s Deandre Gayle winning in 52.75 seconds. Calabar’s Requel Reid was second in 53.24 seconds, with Taj-Oneil Gordon of KC copping third in 53.70 seconds.

In Class One, Shamer Blake (50.76secs) of STETHS saw off Edwin Allen’s Tyrece Hyman (51.04 seconds) and KC’s Antonio Forbes (51.09 seconds) to claim the top podium places.

Saturday’s final day will feature 46 finals, highlighted by the 800m, 200m and the 4x100m relays and the 4x400m relays.
