39 years of Miami carnival: 2023 edition promises spectacular lineup!

The Miami Broward One Carnival Host Committee is in active preparation mode for the upcoming Miami Carnival, a standout among North America’s largest and most notable cultural events.

Get ready for the festivities

Scheduled to enter its 39th year next month, Miami Carnival will commence on September 30, launching with the Junior Carnival where over ten masquerade bands will dazzle attendees with their unique pageantry.

The event’s momentum is set to intensify with the beloved J’ouvert event taking place on Saturday, October 7, from 7am to 3pm, followed by the essential Panorama Competition at the Miami-Dade County Fairgrounds from 11 am to 11 pm.

Cultural diversity on display

This year’s Carnival is poised to be a melting pot of vibrant cultural presentations, the likes of which have never before been seen in South Florida. The mega parade and soca concert, highly anticipated features of the event, offer attendees a chance to dive deep into the captivating music, dance, and culinary delights that epitomize the enchanting Caribbean culture, further enriching Miami’s celebrated cultural diversity.

The celebration, meticulously designed for family enjoyment, will host over twenty masquerade bands and eight steel bands vying for the top spot. Attendees can look forward to an array of offerings including pageantry, arts and crafts, tantalizing soca music, cultural experiences, and a variety of delectable dishes from different Caribbean islands, such as jerk chicken, roti, doubles, and other culinary treasures.

Joan Justin, the Committee Chair, extended an invitation to CN Weekly, stating,

“Miami Carnival welcomes all to join in the festivities, whether you have Caribbean roots or just want to experience the beauty of our culture.”

Connie W. Kinnard, the Senior Vice President of Multicultural Tourism & Development at the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau, echoed Justin’s sentiments, proclaiming,

“It’s one of our destination’s most celebrated festivals, representing the vibrancy

and culture of the Caribbean, Latin America, Africa, and more. We hope both our residents and visitors will attend this multicultural event, which celebrates 39 years of showcasing food, music, dance, and more.”

Miami carnival: a collaborative venture

The event is brought to fruition through the collaborative efforts of the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau, Utopia Carnival Cruise & Festival, the Miami-Dade County Mayor, the Department of Cultural Affairs, the Cultural Affairs Council, and the Board of County Commissioners.

Over the years, Miami Carnival has evolved into a fundamental event for the Caribbean community, drawing participants and spectators from across the US, the Caribbean, Africa, and Europe, making it a global attraction.

Grand finale set to thrill

The grand finale of the Miami Carnival weekend is slated for Sunday, October 8 at the Miami-Dade County Fairgrounds. The day will feature the Parade of Bands and Concert, a sophisticated display of the traditional West Indian Carnival, complete with an array of vibrantly dressed participants. Leading the parade will be the Ethnic Essentials Panamanian Cultural Group, Ms. Miami Broward Carnival Queen, and the Caribbean Cultural Princess.

Additionally, attendees will be treated to performances by soca luminaries including Bunji Garlin, Fay-Ann Lyons, Olatunji, Skinny Fabulous, Ricardo Drue, Claudette Peters, Iwer George, and many others.
