County Court Judge Jackie Powell of Broward County’s 17th Judicial Circuit has been honored with the President’s Award from the Caribbean Bar Association, recognizing her outstanding dedication to community service.
The Jamaican-born judge, who made history as the first Jamaican American woman elected as a judge in Broward County, received the accolade in recognition of her ongoing commitment to local youth mentorship and engagement.
Since her election in 2018, Judge Powell has been a vital presence in the community, using her role to inspire and educate young people. A Plantation resident, she has visited over 50 schools, welcoming students into her courtroom to foster interest in the judiciary and promote career opportunities. Her efforts extend beyond the bench, as she has mentored young people for over 20 years through her church and community.
Chief Judge Jack Tuter of the 17th Circuit congratulated Powell on the award, stating, “Judge Powell is one of the hardest-working and most approachable judges in our circuit. We are grateful for her many contributions to both the judiciary and the Broward community.”
Judge Powell’s impact on the community has been recognized through numerous accolades, including a 2024 Letter of Honor from the City of North Lauderdale and the Jamaican-American Bar Association’s Outstanding Judiciary Award. Other recent recognitions include being named a Judicial Honoree for the 17th Circuit and an honoree in Black America’s Best Professionals by the International Career and Business Alliance.
Judge Powell serves on multiple boards, including Voices for the Children of Broward County and the Jamaican Women of Florida, where she works to advance support for underserved populations. “My passion is youth. I seize every opportunity to encourage young people to reach for their dreams,” Powell said. “What we do for others remains in the world.”
The 17th Judicial Circuit, one of the largest in Florida, spans four courthouses, including the Broward County Courthouse in Fort Lauderdale, and serves as the judicial hub for Broward County’s 90 judges.
