Jamaica’s police chief calls for diaspora engagement in community initiatives

Jamaica’s Commissioner of Police Dr. Kevin Blake is actively seeking support from the diaspora for community-level interventions as a key strategy in combating crime.

By enhancing community infrastructure, Dr. Blake emphasizes that the police force can perform its duties more effectively, thus ensuring safer environments.

Empowering youth through community engagement

During the 10th Biennial Jamaica Diaspora Conference held at the Montego Bay Convention Centre, Dr. Blake highlighted the importance of creating nurturing environments that contribute positively to youth development.

The focus is on constructing spaces where young people can feel secure and are kept engaged, thereby reducing the likelihood of their involvement in criminal activities.

Project STAR: Pioneering change through collaboration

Dr. Blake shed light on Project STAR (Social Transformation and Renewal), a collaborative initiative led by the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica in partnership with the Jamaica Constabulary Force.

This program seeks to engage community members directly, allowing them to identify their challenges and co-create solutions that foster social and economic transformation.

Community-centric approaches in policing

The initiative does not impose predetermined solutions but instead facilitates discussions with communities to pinpoint specific problems and develop tailored strategies.

Dr. Blake detailed the process, noting that the community drafts the plans while the police aid in their implementation, ensuring that interventions are both community-specific and effective.

Economic development as a core aspect of Project STAR

Dr. Blake also emphasized the economic arm of Project STAR, which focuses on job creation and economic development.

This aspect has reportedly brought significant benefits to the communities involved, demonstrating the effectiveness of holistic, collaborative approaches to community aid.

Call to action for diaspora engagement

The commissioner extended an invitation to the diaspora to participate and contribute to these initiatives.

By leveraging the support and resources of Jamaicans abroad, the program aims to enhance its impact and reach, ultimately leading to more resilient and self-sufficient communities.
