Nick Perry has officially ended his service as the U.S. Ambassador to Jamaica, stepping down just days before the inauguration of Donald Trump as the new President of the United States.
Jamaican Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness acknowledged Perry’s departure with a heartfelt message on social media. Holness wrote: “On behalf of the people of Jamaica, I express heartfelt gratitude to Ambassador Perry, for his service during his tenure as the US Ambassador to Jamaica. With so many Jamaicans living in the United States, our connection is akin to that of a family, and Ambassador Perry’s efforts have helped to nurture and strengthen this special bond. During his tenure, Jamaica and the United States made significant strides, including advancements in the areas of national security and support for victims of violence in Jamaica.”
To commemorate his time as ambassador, Holness said he presented Ambassador Perry with a depiction of the island’s iconic Dunn’s River Falls.
“We hope it will serve as a lasting reminder of his time here and inspire him to continue being an advocate for Jamaica. We wish Ambassador Perry all the very best,” he said.
Perry, who was appointed in 2021 by President Joe Biden after a recommendation from U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, brought decades of political experience to the role. An immigrant from Jamaica, Perry had served for 30 years as an Assemblyman in the New York State Legislature, where he was Assistant Speaker Pro Tempore and Regional Vice Chairman of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators.
During his time in public service, Perry held leadership roles including Chairmanship of the New York State Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic, and Asian Legislative Caucus from 2015 to 2018 and the New York State Association of Black and Puerto Rican Legislators from 2012 to 2015. He was recognized as Legislator of the Year by the National Black Caucus of State Legislators in 2018 and has received honors from organizations such as the New York Civil Liberties Union.
Reflecting on his tenure, Nick Perry expressed his gratitude and optimism in a message shared on social media: “Thank you, PM @AndrewHolnessJM, for your warm hospitality and support. As my time as U.S. Ambassador to Jamaica ends, I am proud of the deeper bonds we’ve forged and the progress we’ve made together. One Love.”
