On Thursday, April 18th, 2024, the Diaspora Satellite Launch-Southern USA 10th Biennial Jamaica Diaspora Conference unfolded at the Miramar Commission Chamber in the City of Miramar.
Attendees were greeted by the harmonious strains of the Star Spangled Banner and the Jamaican National Anthem.
Judge Norman Hemmings, serving as Master of Ceremonies, introduced Mayor Wayne Messam, lauding his historic bid as the first Jamaican to vie for the presidency of the United States and his background as a former American football wide receiver.
Mayor Messam, extending a warm welcome, underscored Miramar’s distinction of boasting not only a Jamaican Mayor but also the highest number of Jamaican politicians serving in any single city across the USA.
While the event celebrated the Jamaican Diaspora, Mayor Messam also emphasized the inclusivity of Miramar, embracing residents from diverse cultural backgrounds. Addressing the ongoing challenges in Haiti and the local Haitian community, he drew parallels to the Haitian revolution’s triumph over slavery and colonial rule, urging Jamaicans in the Diaspora to serve as beacons of success in their pursuits.
Abundant opportunities for Jamaica diaspora
Following the Mayor’s address, Vice Mayor Alexandra P. Davis and Commissioners Yvette Colbourne and Maxwell Chambers extended brief welcomes. Oliver Mair, the Consul General from Jamaica to Miami, was hailed as a stalwart advocate for the community. He took the stage amidst the melodious strains of Bob Marley’s “One Love,” captivating the audience with a call-and-response rendition.
Expressing gratitude for the unwavering support of the community, he announced the upcoming Jamaica Diaspora conference scheduled for June 16th – 19th, 2024, in Montego Bay, Jamaica.
In his remarks, Consul General Mair emphasized the allure of investing in Jamaica, highlighting its abundant opportunities. Invoking the spirit of Jamaican resilience, he called upon the audience to echo the rallying cry of “Tallawah,” symbolizing strength in adversity. His speech segued into a stirring performance by Steve Higgins and choir.
The conference also featured insights from Peter Gracey, the Global Jamaica Diaspora Council Representative, and sponsors including Victoria Mutual Building Society, Grace Kennedy Remittance Service, Jamaica National Money Services, Jamaica Tourist Board, and Blue Mahoe Capital. Drumming Fingers delivered an enthralling performance, while the conference launch video showcased the theme “Reconnect with your roots, united for Jamaica’s transformation.”

Keynote Speaker, the Hon. Alando Terrelonge, MP, JP, Minister of State, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, extended warm regards on behalf of Jamaica’s Prime Minister and government. Describing the diaspora as an extension of Jamaica’s family, Minister Terrelonge articulated the theme “United for Jamaica’s transformation, fostering peace.” He heralded a 14% reduction in crime and encouraged conference registration, positioning Jamaica as a premier hub for trade and investment.
Minister Terrelonge embraced Jamaica’s global diaspora as brand ambassadors, extolling their role in promoting the nation’s expertise and educational institutions worldwide. He unveiled innovative crime-fighting measures, including the introduction of “shot spotter cameras,” and heralded advancements in infrastructure and healthcare digitization across Jamaica.
The Minister’s impassioned address culminated in a resounding standing ovation, marking the conclusion of a momentous event.
