The festive atmosphere of the Worcester Caribbean American Carnival in Massachusetts was abruptly disrupted on Sunday after two bystanders, near Institute Park, became the victims of a shooting incident.
The incident took place around 6 p.m. at Boynton Street’s intersection with Salisbury Street.

Immediate response and event closure
Reports are that law enforcement swiftly arrived at the scene, identifying the injured as a 15-year-old and a 23-year-old.
Both were rushed to the hospital with injuries deemed non-life-threatening.
Initial investigations suggest that neither victim was involved in the preceding altercation or were the intended targets.
The disturbing aftermath of the incident became evident outside Institute Park: a bloodied Nike sneaker lay abandoned, and a nearby pool of blood was cordoned off by police tape.
Authorities further secured a segment of Boynton Street, stretching from the Armenian Church of Our Saviour’s cultural center to the Boynton Lot of Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
Jennifer Gaskin, head of the Worcester Caribbean American Carnival Association, regretfully announced the festival’s premature conclusion, urging all attendees and vendors to promptly leave the park.

As law enforcement officials cleared the area, many attendees found themselves near the crime scene on Salisbury Street.
Despite the tragedy, Gaskin emphasized the community’s resilience, expressing concern over the injured, especially the teenage victim.
She urged the community to rally around the affected families, stressing that the real concern lies not in the event’s abrupt end but in the wellbeing of the injured.
She also highlighted the pressing issue of youth involved in gun violence, urging the city to recognize and address the problem head-on.

A concerning pattern
The Worcester incident came on the heels of another shooting at the Boston Caribbean Carnival, which left eight injured.
Despite ongoing investigations, no arrests have been made related to the Worcester shooting.
The proximity of the incident to Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) led the institution to clarify that none of its members were involved or hurt, while extending their sympathies to the affected.
Reactions from key figures
Various officials and leaders voiced their distress over the weekend’s incidents.
Governor Maura Healey expressed her grief over the recurring gun violence incidents in both Boston and Worcester, emphasizing collaborative efforts to curb illegal firearms and address underlying issues.
Worcester’s Mayor Joseph Petty and City Councilor Khrystian King both highlighted the unifying and celebratory essence of the carnival, with King emphasizing that the recent act of violence does not represent the decade-long history of WACA’s Carnival.
