Some Jamaican farm produce prices expected to fall ahead of Christmas

As the festive season of Christmas rapidly approaches, signs of relief are on the horizon for Jamaican consumers.

According to the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA), there is an anticipated increase in the supply of key agricultural goods, which is expected to lead to a welcome decrease in prices.

Rainfall to revitalize crops

RADA’s Post-Harvest Specialist, Dwight Forrester, who is also serving as the Acting Production and Marketing Manager, has noted that recent weather conditions have been favorable for farmers, particularly those who have previously suffered from drought conditions.

This climatic boon has been largely responsible for rejuvenating agricultural output in some of the most productive parishes.

Vegetables and tubers to become more affordable

In light of these developments, Forrester anticipates a drop in the prices of several vegetables and root crops.

He shared that he anticipates a decrease in prices for lettuce, pak choi, and tomatoes.

A bumper crop of cabbages on the horizon

He added that a slight decrease is also anticipated for cabbages. He pointed out that the high-producing areas of St Elizabeth, Clarendon, and Manchester are reporting that come the second week of November, there will be an increase in the volume of these commodities in the marketplace.

Yam prices to yield

A staple in local diets, yam has been fetching high prices, soaring up to $300 per pound.

Forrester said the high-producing parishes are indicating that consumers can expect a slight decrease in prices, as availability is increasing as time goes by.

Short-cycle crops to make a comeback

According to reports, the availability of six-week vegetables and crops, which had been adversely affected by the year’s dry conditions, is also expected to increase in availability for Christmas.

This is a direct result of ongoing initiatives by RADA, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Mining, to bolster support for farmers across the island.

Commitment to food security

In the broader context of national interest, Forrester underscores the commitment of all stakeholders to transform the concept of national food security into a tangible reality.

The goal is to ensure that Jamaican consumers have consistent access to safe and affordable food.
