Sean Paul to receive honorary Degree from UTech

Sean Paul Henriques will be coffered with an honorary degree from The University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech) in recognition of his remarkable achievements in music and his contributions to nation-building, he will be awarded the Doctor of Letters Honoris Causa on Friday, November 15, 2024 at the institutions 2024 graduation ceremony.

Sean Paul had enrolled in UTech in pursuit of a degree in hospitality and tourism management, but his passion for music ultimately led him to leave before completing his studies.

The Grammy Award-winning international superstar is renowned for his distinct voice, catchy rhythms, first-rate production, and superb performances. He gained international fame with his second album, Dutty Rock, in 2002. Its single “Get Busy” topped the US Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States, as did “Temperature”, off his third album, The Trinity (2005).

Most of his albums have been nominated for Grammy Awards for Best Reggae Album, with Dutty Rock winning the award. Paul has been featured in many other singles, including chart-toppers “Baby Boy” by Beyoncé, “Breathe” by Blu Cantrell, “What About Us” by The Saturdays, “Rockabye” by Clean Bandit, “Cheap Thrills” by Sia, and “Fuego” by DJ Snake. “Cheap Thrills” and “Rockabye”, along with Paul’s own “No Lie” (2016), each have over 1 billion views on YouTube, with “Rockabye” having reached over 2.7 billion views

In 2019, Sean Paul was conferred with the Order of Distinction from the Jamaican Government for his contribution to the global popularity and promotion of reggae music.

Other honorary graduates at the ceremony will include former Police Commissioner Major General Antony Anderson, who will receive the Doctor of Technology Honoris Causa, and Christopher Zacca, a prominent Jamaican business leader, who will be awarded the Doctor of Laws Honoris Causa.

Dr. Kevin Brown, president of UTech, Jamaica, commented on the honors being conferred, stating, “The University of Technology, Jamaica is pleased to recognize these distinguished nation-builders for their exceptional contributions to Jamaica’s growth and development. Their dedication and impact serve as an inspiration to all, and we celebrate their achievements as we encourage our graduates to follow in their footsteps.”
