In his first full stage performance after being released from incarceration, dancehall sensation Vybz Kartel captivated fans for nearly four hours at a packed National Stadium on New Year’s Eve. While the show may not have had the high-energy intensity many were used to seeing from the Worl’ Boss, for Gaza fans who had eagerly awaited the opportunity to witness the iconic artist in action for the first time in over a decade, the historic moment exceeded their expectations.
Patrons were taken on a journey of nostalgic memories as they witnessed a grand spectacle, culminating in the highly anticipated ‘Gaza Reunion’. With gates scheduled to open at 4 p.m., Freedom Street supporters were so eager that many arrived as early as 1 p.m., excited for the event that promised to be a memorable celebration.
The much-anticipated event got off to a late start, as Vybz Kartel did not make his scheduled 10:00 p.m. stage appearance. Instead, the deejay made his grand entrance just after 11:00 p.m., greeted by loud screams and cheers from his global fanbase gathered at the venue. After months of speculation, fans were clearly satisfied as Kartel kicked off his performance with his hit single, “Hustle The Money,” setting the tone for an unforgettable night.
The deejay, clearly in a celebratory mood, expressed his gratitude for being able to return to the stage after 13 years. “After 13 years, we deh yah and we give God thanks,” he said before welcoming a number of his ‘students’ for a much-anticipated Gaza reunion. The opening acts included Gaza Indu, Lisa Hyper, Jahvinci, and Shawn Storm — all notable entertainers who rose to prominence from Kartel’s legendary Gaza camp. The reunion brought together fans and artists alike, celebrating the lasting legacy of the iconic dancehall collective.
The eventful set unfolded with a seamless flow of colleagues joining the ‘Worl’ Boss’ on stage. Among them were musician and producer Rvssian, as well as dancehall diva Spice, who captivated the crowd in a blue custom-designed short set, complete with a matching crown and boots, all adorned with a handkerchief-patterned bandana. She further completed her striking look with a coat featuring an image of the duo from their iconic single, “Romping Shop,” symbolizing the orange bandana Kartel wore in prison.
As the clock struck midnight, Kartel rang in the New Year alongside Spice in a fireworks-style celebration. Afterward, he was joined by Shawn Storm, and later resumed his performance with Spice, delivering an array of their sizzling hits that kept the energy high throughout the night.
At 12:33 a.m., an international collaboration with Busta Rhymes got the crowd vibing to a fresh beat and pace, adding an exciting twist to the night. However, the Gaza reunion continued as artistes like Jah Vinci, Popcaan, Sheba, and Vybz Kartel’s sons, Likkle Addi and Likkle Vybz, took the stage. The energy was further amplified by appearances from dancehall legend Bounty Killer, African superstar Shatta Wale, and Tommy Lee. Additionally, cameo appearances by Skeng, Nhance, and Ishawna left a lasting impression on the crowd at Freedom Street, making the event even more memorable.
Midway through his set, Vybz Kartel surprised the crowd with a ‘Black Kartel’ look, reminiscent of his ‘jersey days,’ and delivered a series of hits from his early 2000s catalogue. The crowd responded with palpable excitement as the energy reached a peak. However, the momentum was briefly interrupted by a scuffle among the entourages of some artistes, accompanied by insults and slurs directed at the organisers by Popcaan and Chronic Law. This caused a brief scare among patrons, but security quickly intervened to restore order. “Look how unusual ago mash up the show,” Vybz Kartel remarked, acknowledging the brief disruption. Despite the interruption, the event continued for about another 30 minutes. Eventually, the Worl’ Boss took to the mic to inform the crowd that police officers had called time on the event, signaling the end of a historic night. Kartel closed the night by expressing his heartfelt gratitude to the fans for their support.
Despite the slow start and hiccups along the way, fans expressed no regrets about the expense and shared their excitement at being in Jamaica to experience the moment.
“Some people saying the show didn’t have the energy we are used to from Vybz Kartel, but considering he has not performed in 13 years he did really well. I enjoyed the show to the fullest” said Stacy who travelled from New York to be there.
