Bermuda launches groundbreaking Cancer Control Plan

The Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre (BCHC) has welcomed the island’s inaugural national plan aimed at combating cancer through proactive measures in prevention, early detection, and treatment.

This monumental move marks a pivotal moment in Bermuda’s healthcare landscape, signaling a unified effort to confront the pervasive challenges posed by cancer.

Uniting forces against cancer

The Bermuda National Cancer Control Plan has issued a rallying call to action, summoning healthcare stakeholders, governmental bodies, NGOs, insurers, cancer survivors, and the broader Bermudian community to join forces in the fight against cancer.

A spokesperson for BCHC expressed optimism, emphasizing the plan’s potential to propel Bermuda towards a future defined by improved quality of life and a diminished cancer burden.

Strategic approach for a healthier Bermuda

Dr. Chris Fosker, BCHC’s medical director and clinical oncologist, hailed the release of the National Cancer Control Plan (NCCP) for the years 2024-2030 as a crucial step forward.

With cancer responsible for approximately one-third of all deaths on the island,

Dr. Fosker stressed the imperative for a coordinated strategy to address prevalent cancers such as lung, prostate, colorectal, and breast cancers.

A holistic vision for cancer control

Initiated in 2020, the NCCP advocates for a comprehensive framework encompassing prevention, early detection, treatment, survivorship, and palliative care.

It underscores the necessity for collaborative efforts across diverse sectors, including government entities, NGOs, and healthcare professionals.

Aligned with the Bermuda Health Strategy 2022-2027, the plan echoes the vision of fostering healthy communities and equitable access to healthcare services.

Global recognition and support

Endorsed by the Ministry of Health, the NCCP has garnered praise from global health entities and received backing from prominent international health organizations.

Dr. Fosker highlighted the plan’s transformative potential, shifting from mere acknowledgment of challenges to proactive pursuit of solutions, showcasing Bermuda’s commitment to revolutionizing cancer care.

Pioneering funding and implementation

Partially funded by the Chronic Disease Innovation Programme under the purview of the Bermuda Health Council, the NCCP represents a collaborative endeavor to confront the multifaceted challenges posed by cancer.

With actionable goals, objectives, and strategies outlined, Bermuda strides forward in its mission to alleviate the impact of cancer and elevate standards of care across the island.
