Health officials in the Bahamas report increase in COVID-19 cases

The Ministry of Health in the Bahamas has reported a surge in COVID-19 cases, particularly on New Providence and Grand Bahama islands.

December’s spike and recent developments

Reports are that in the last six weeks, 36 new cases have been identified, with a significant number, 26, emerging in December alone.

Grand Bahama has witnessed 11 new cases in the past two weeks, along with the death of a male due to the virus.

Hospitalizations but no critical cases

In New Providence, two individuals have been hospitalized due to COVID-19. These cases do not require intensive care, indicating a less severe impact of the virus currently.

Overall impact since the pandemic’s start

Reports are that Bahamas has recorded 24,423 confirmed COVID-19 cases since the onset of the pandemic.

The death toll stands at 846, with an additional 12 deaths under investigation, painting a stark picture of the virus’  impact over the years.

The Ministry of Health remains on high alert, closely monitoring disease trends that could pose a threat to public health in The Bahamas.

The region has seen an uptick in viral respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19, alongside increased visits to public health facilities for flu-like symptoms.

Identifying predominant viral strains

The Ministry has identified COVID-19, influenza B, influenza A, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) as the primary culprits behind the recent spike in respiratory illnesses.

This multi-virus scenario complicates the public health landscape, requiring continued vigilance and response strategies.
