The Government of Guyana, in collaboration with the Attorney General’s Chambers and the Ministry of Legal Affairs, is gearing up to host an unprecedented legal conference titled “Legal Conference on Criminal Justice Reform – Advancing the Needham’s Point Declaration”.
This groundbreaking event, scheduled for July 10-11, marks a significant step in the region’s legal discourse.
A modern approach to legal challenges
In an effort to modernize and adapt its legal framework, the Government of Guyana has taken proactive steps to evolve its judicial system to meet modern legal challenges effectively.
The conference emerges as a key component of this initiative, developed through a collaborative partnership between the nation’s legal departments and the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) Academy for Law.
The endeavor is supported by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) through the Support for the Criminal Justice System (SCJS) project in Guyana.
Addressing critical issues in criminal justice
The conference aims to tackle various pressing issues within criminal justice reform, such as reducing pre-trial detentions and introducing alternative sentencing methods to alleviate prison overcrowding.
It will serve as a platform for discussing and implementing the strategies outlined in the Needham’s Point Declaration, which was established during the 7th Biennial Conference of the CCJ Academy for Law in Barbados in October 2023.
Educational objectives and legal enlightenment
The Attorney General of Guyana has underscored the importance of ongoing legal education as part of the country’s transformative agenda.
The upcoming conference will facilitate continued education on best practices and emerging issues in criminal justice.
Discussions will span numerous topics, including the elimination of case backlogs, implementation of Criminal Procedure Rules, and the use of DNA evidence in court, among others.
A convergence of legal minds
This conference is expected to draw a diverse group of legal professionals from across the Caribbean, including Attorneys General, judges, legal experts, policymakers, and law students.
These participants will engage in rich discussions aimed at furthering the principles of the Needham’s Point Declaration and enhancing the effectiveness of the criminal justice system in the region.
