Antigua and Barbuda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chet Greene, briefed the Cabinet on Wednesday regarding the upcoming 4th International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
Minister Greene confirmed that preparations are underway to host dignitaries during the SIDS4 conference, scheduled from May 27 to 30 in Antigua.
Notably, accommodation arrangements have been solidified for all attending Presidents and Prime Ministers.
Diverse funding sources
In a collaborative effort, funding for the attendance of leaders and their respective delegations has been secured through various channels.
The Cotton Development Research Association (CDRA) in India will sponsor 15 leaders and their teams, while the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the United States will fund 8 and 14 leaders, respectively.
Extensive accommodation arrangements
Beyond the distinguished guests, preparations extend to accommodate a significant number of additional attendees.
Cabinet spokesperson Lionel Hurst disclosed that over 1000 rooms have already been secured, ensuring ample lodging separate from the leaders and their entourages.
Unconventional support
Given Antigua and Barbuda’s limited size, larger nations have stepped forward to offer assistance with accommodation arrangements.
This cooperative effort underscores the spirit of international solidarity and cooperation.
Security measures
Ensuring the safety of all participants remains paramount. Antigua and Barbuda, as the host country, will shoulder the responsibility for security, bolstered by support from Regional Security Services and a dedicated satellite team.
Registration of drivers and vehicle inspections are slated to take place this month in preparation for the conference.
