To combat the persistent issue of illegal dumping, the government of Antigua has announced an increase in fines for such offenses, raising the maximum penalty to $40,000.
This decision was reached following a Cabinet meeting where the detrimental effects of unsanctioned waste disposal were a central topic of discussion.
Worsening conditions prompt government action
The issue has been exacerbated by recent heavy rains, which have led to blocked drains and an unsightly accumulation of debris.
This has heightened environmental concerns, as floating waste not only mars the aesthetic beauty of the environment but also poses significant health risks.
Stricter penalties to deter offenders
During the meeting, Cabinet members unanimously supported the implementation of harsher penalties to deter the recurrent problem of illegal dumping.
They highlighted the environmental urgency and the need for a robust legal framework to penalize offenders effectively.
Enhanced surveillance and legal amendments
Cabinet Spokesman Lionel Hurst outlined the government’s strategy to enforce these new fines.
The plan includes the installation of cameras and sensors at known dumping sites to catch offenders in the act.
This footage is intended to serve as irrefutable evidence in court, ensuring offenders can be successfully prosecuted under Antiguan law.
Legislative updates and enforcement
To facilitate the enforcement of these increased fines, amendments to the existing Litter Control and Prevention Act of 2019 are necessary.
These changes are expected to be enacted and put into effect as early as next month.
Under the current law, individuals are subject to fines of up to $3,000, while corporations can be fined as much as $15,000 for waste disposal violations.
The revised fines are a significant escalation in the government’s efforts to maintain environmental cleanliness and public health.
