Antigua launches research on marijuana to understand impact on youth

Antigua’s government has taken a proactive step in understanding the social and health implications of marijuana among its youth.

A special team of six experts has been commissioned to investigate and deliver an initial report on the subject.

This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to reviewing the outcomes of the legislative changes enacted in 2018, which decriminalized the possession of up to 15 grams of marijuana and allowed individuals to cultivate up to four marijuana plants at home.

Legislative changes and youth experimentation

The research is driven by a need to address and scientifically analyze the anecdotal evidence suggesting a rise in marijuana experimentation among young people post-decriminalization.

By employing rigorous scientific methodologies and maintaining strict confidentiality, the study aims to provide a clear picture of the current situation.

This approach underscores the government’s methodical response to concerns surrounding youth engagement with marijuana in a new legislative landscape.

Strategic goals and government insight

The government’s strategy, articulated by Cabinet Spokesperson Lionel Hurst, highlights a dual focus.

Firstly, the initiative seeks to dismantle the criminal networks previously thriving under marijuana prohibition. Secondly, it aims to objectively evaluate whether these efforts have been successful.

The study is also a response to the numerous narratives circulating about the real-world effects of the law change, aiming to replace speculation with evidence.
