In a significant milestone for the Bahamas, the nation is jubilant over the recent approval of a groundbreaking United Nations Resolution titled “Promotion of Inclusive and Effective International Tax Cooperation.”
The resolution, a brainchild of Nigeria, has garnered immense support, receiving backing from 125 countries during the vote held on November 22.
This historic achievement is viewed as a pivotal move towards dismantling the dominant influence held by a select “small club of rich countries” within the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
Prime Minister Philip Davis leads the charge
Bahamian Prime Minister Philip Davis, an advocate for equitable international tax policies, expressed his delight at this momentous resolution.
He sees it as a crucial stride towards establishing a comprehensive framework that could erode the overwhelming control wielded by affluent nations in global tax matters.
Davis emphasized that the Bahamas has always maintained a steadfast position, advocating for an international tax system that not only includes developing nations but also recognizes their unique challenges and circumstances.
In his statement, Prime Minister Davis declared, “Our commitment to maintaining the highest tax compliance standards is unwavering, and this historic moment is a testament to our dedication to overcoming the inequities propagated by current tax policy frameworks and institutions. We have consistently emphasised the need for a reformed global tax structure that honours the sovereignty of nations like The Bahamas, which have been disproportionately affected by the Global North’s biased policies,” he said.
Championing transparency, justice, and sustainable development
Furthermore, Davis emphasized the Bahamas’ readiness to actively engage with the United Nations to shape a tax system that embodies transparency, justice, and sustainable development.
He pledged to lead the charge and tirelessly advocate for policies that safeguard the economic interests of all countries, with a particular focus on those historically marginalized in global tax negotiations.
Drawing on the Bahamas’ unique experiences, he affirmed the nation’s commitment to fostering a fair, transparent, and balanced international tax regime.
The vote is being hailed as a significant shift in global tax policy as several similar resolutions were not approved by members.
