Belize moves to digital immigration, customs declaration system

The Belizean government has recently introduced a new online immigration and customs declaration system aimed at streamlining travel procedures for individuals entering and leaving the country. This initiative, launched by the Department of Border Management and Immigration Services in collaboration with the Customs and Excise Department and the Ministry of Public Utilities, Energy, Logistics, and E-Governance, allows travelers to submit their immigration and customs information in advance via an easy-to-use web platform.

The system’s primary goals are to enhance data accuracy and improve the efficiency of the travel experience for everyone involved. By submitting required information ahead of time, travelers can save time at border crossings and ensure a smoother process. This platform represents a significant step toward modernizing Belize’s travel and border management processes, offering a more efficient and user-friendly approach to immigration and customs.

Authorities confirmed that the system will be initially available for travelers entering and exiting through the Philip Goldson International Airport, beginning December 1, 2024. The implementation will follow a carefully planned three-month phased introduction to ensure a smooth transition to a fully digital process.

During the initial test phase, both printed and digital forms will be accepted, with the government encouraging travelers to utilize the digital option. “This approach will allow us to fine-tune the system and deliver an efficient and seamless experience,” officials stated.

The government invited travelers to provide feedback to support ongoing system improvements. In the second phase, the digital declaration system will be extended to all ports of entry in Belize.

“This shift to a digital system underscores our commitment to modernizing travel procedures and enhancing the overall traveler experience,” the statement emphasized.

As the peak tourism season approaches, the transition is expected to significantly reduce—and eventually eliminate—the need for paper forms, ensuring faster and more convenient immigration and customs processing for all travelers.
