CARICOM summit concludes with focus on Haiti and regional growth strategies

CARICOM leaders concluded their four-day summit in Guyana on Wednesday night, setting forth plans for Haiti’s political stability and bolstering regional resilience and growth initiatives.

Host and CARICOM chairman, President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, lauded the summit’s accomplishments, noting the strategic discussions addressing crucial issues concerning the region.

The leaders devoted substantial attention to Haiti, recognizing its pivotal role in the Caribbean and the urgency of resolving its political and governance challenges. 

Bahamas Prime Minister Phillip Davis underscored the gravity of the situation in Haiti, likening it to a crisis of immense proportions.

Urgency for action

While deliberations on Haiti dominated the summit, concrete action was advocated.

CARICOM leaders emphasized the need for immediate steps to navigate the political impasse and facilitate free and fair elections in Haiti.

Plans for a follow-up meeting underscored the pressing nature of the issue, with Guyana’s President Ali urging swift and intensive efforts.

International collaboration

CARICOM heads engaged with key international partners and received updates from the Eminent Persons Group, emphasizing the importance of collaborative solutions and inclusive processes in addressing Haiti’s challenges.

Economic resilience and growth

Beyond Haiti, discussions delved into fortifying the region’s economic resilience and fostering growth.

 Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley highlighted the imperative of transitioning from crisis management to sustainable economic development. 

Initiatives such as the Caribbean Development Fund and the establishment of the Blue-Green Investment Bank signify the region’s commitment to advancing its economic agenda.

Path forward

The establishment of a working group on financing for Caribbean development signals a proactive approach toward addressing climate crises and promoting sustainable growth. 

Led by Guyana’s Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo, this initiative underscores CARICOM’s dedication to fostering resilience and prosperity in the region.
