Dominican Republic steps up as new president of Summit of the Americas

The Dominican Republic has officially stepped into a pivotal role on the international stage as the new president of the Summit of the Americas. 

The leadership baton was passed to the Caribbean nation in a significant ceremony in Washington DC, marking the commencement of its tenure.

Ceremony marks transition of responsibilities

The transition of the presidency was formalized through a ceremonial event where Dominican Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez was entrusted with the chairmanship by Brian Nichols, the Assistant Secretary of State of the United States.

The changeover signifies a crucial moment for hemispheric relations and underscores the Dominican Republic’s growing influence in regional affairs.

Commitment to inclusivity and effectiveness

During the proceedings, Minister Álvarez underscored the Dominican Republic’s dedication to hosting a Summit that is inclusive and captures the breadth of issues facing the region.

 Álvarez shared that the Dominican leadership intends to build upon the strong foundation established by previous hosts, aiming to ensure that the 2025 Summit fully embodies the hopes and collective will of all participating nations.

The Dominican Republic is the second Caribbean nation to host the hemispheric summit, which brings together leaders from North, Central, and South America and the Caribbean.
