Guyanese rally to support Palestine

Guyana’s citizens have demonstrated their solidarity with the people of Palestine by raising over US$374,000 in a charitable effort.

The fundraising initiative took place during a charity event held at the Ramadan Village. This event, themed “A Night of Prayer for Global Peace, Guyana and Palestine”, coincided with Laylat Al Qadr, the sacred 27th night of Ramadan.

President’s call for humanity

Addressing attendees at the event, President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali emphasized the compassionate spirit of Guyanese people, who refuse to ignore the suffering endured by millions of Palestinians.

He asserted that Guyana’s history reflects a tradition of generosity and solidarity with those in need, positioning the country as one of the leading contributors to global humanitarian efforts.

Historic milestone for Guyana

President Ali hailed the fundraising endeavor as a significant moment for both the nation and its people.

He urged global leaders to recognize the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as an ongoing humanitarian crisis, emphasizing the urgent need for intervention to halt what he described as “genocidal actions.”

Alarming humanitarian situation

According to reports from the Ministry of Health in Gaza, at least 33,137 Palestinians have lost their lives at the hands of the Israeli army since October 7, 2023, with a majority being women and children.

The United Nations has issued warnings of an impending famine in Gaza, predicting that nearly all of its 2.3 million residents will face dire food shortages if Israel’s blockade and siege persist unchecked.

Upholding solidarity and advocacy

The fundraising efforts of Guyanese citizens not only exemplify their commitment to global solidarity but also underscore the urgent need for international action to address the humanitarian crisis in Palestine.
