Increase in burglaries raises concerns in the British Virgin Islands

The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) has raised an alarm due to the surge in burglaries in the UK overseas territory.

Reports are that over the past week, residential properties and businesses have fallen victim to a series of break-ins and attempted burglaries, resulting in the loss of cash and valuable possessions.

Police vow to crack down on criminals

Commissioner of Police Mark Collins has assured the public that the RVIPF is leaving no stone unturned in their efforts to apprehend the culprits.

He stated that the country’s officers are committed to investigating and prosecuting the offenders of these crimes.

He added that the public’s help is needed in identifying and apprehending these criminals.

Protecting homes and businesses: A collective responsibility

Residents of the British Virgin Islands are being urged to take proactive measures to enhance the security of their homes and businesses.

The police force has provided valuable tips to help islanders protect their properties.

1. Keeping an Eye with CCTV Cameras

Installing CCTV cameras in and around your premises can be an effective way to monitor activities and deter potential burglars. The vigilant eye of technology can serve as a formidable deterrent.

2. Illuminate for security

Utilize alarm systems and ensure that the exterior of your property is well lit. Adequate lighting serves as a deterrent to would-be intruders, making your property less appealing as a target.

3. Lock doors and windows

Always securely lock your doors and windows, particularly when you are away from your premises. This simple yet crucial measure significantly reduces the risk of unauthorized entry.

4. Regularly inspect and maintain the locking mechanisms

Regularly inspect and maintain the locking mechanisms on all windows, ensuring they are fully operational. Any faulty locks should be promptly repaired or replaced to maintain your property’s security.

5. Safeguard your valuable possessions

Safeguard your valuable possessions by photographing them in their respective locations within your home. Create a detailed inventory list for each item and record serial numbers or specific identifying marks. This documentation can be invaluable in identifying stolen items in case of theft.

6. Establish neighborhood watch

Consider establishing a neighborhood watch group, conveniently organized through a WhatsApp platform or other means. In this setup, residents within a specific neighborhood can serve as vigilant observers, promptly reporting any suspicious incidents they come across to their fellow community members and the Police. Community solidarity can be a powerful tool in crime prevention.
