A magnitude-5.9 offshore earthquake occurred in the Caribbean Sea Monday morning rattling both Cuba and Jamaica.
The Earthquake’s epicenter was about 37 km (23 miles) south of Guisa, Cuba. The tremor occurred at a depth of around 22 km (14 miles), with strong shaking felt in parts of Santiago de Cuba and Granma provinces in eastern Cuba near the epicenter, with light-to-moderate shaking felt elsewhere in eastern Cuba.
The earthquake was also felt in parts of Jamaica according to the Earthquake Unit. The unit says the epicenter was located at approximately 165 km north of Ocho Rios, St Ann.
There have been no reports of damage or casualties yet but authorities says they are still doing checks, especially in areas near the epicenter a process they say could take several hours.
The Earthquake Unit is also warning persons in affected areas that aftershocks are likely over the coming days.
The event has not prompted any tsunami advisories.
