Jamaica receives first deportation flight from the US for 2025

Some 50 Jamaicans arrived on the island on Thursday on the first deportation flight from the United States for 2025, according to reports.

Jamaica’s Foreign Affairs Minister Kamina Johnson Smith said that the arrival of the deportation flight from the U.S. in Kingston was part of ongoing monthly arrangements.

While the number of individuals aboard the flight was not confirmed by Johnson Smith, the minister emphasized that the Jamaican government is fully aware of both local and U.S. concerns regarding the strengthened enforcement of U.S. immigration policies.

Minister Kamina Johnson Smith addressed the growing concerns fueled by misinformation circulating on social media, particularly claims that tens of thousands of Jamaicans are about to be deported en masse. She firmly stated that these claims are “categorically false.” The Minister assured that the Jamaican government is closely monitoring the situation and maintaining active communication with U.S. authorities. She also emphasized that, like most nations, Jamaica has international obligations to accept the return of its citizens who are subject to deportation.

“For those who may have concerns about their personal immigration status, we strongly advise seeking professional legal advice. The Jamaican Embassy in Washington, along with our Consulates-General in New York and Miami, have compiled contact information for attorneys with a track record of assisting members of our diaspora. While these lists are not exhaustive, they provide a trusted starting point for those in need of legal guidance. They will be available on the relevant websites in very short order,” she added.

Since President Donald Trump’s return to the White House on January 20, his administration has significantly increased arrests of undocumented migrants, with over 3,500 individuals detained in major US cities. This marks a sharp contrast to the 310 average arrests per month made during the 2024 fiscal year under former President Joe Biden, according to data from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Additionally, the Trump administration has begun utilizing military aircraft for deportation flights to certain countries.
