For Shawna Martin Nelson, a 36-year-old Jamaican woman, each step taken has been filled with pain and discomfort. For over 30 years, Martin Nelson has lived with Clubfoot, a congenital condition characterized by the twisting of the foot and ankle due to tight ligaments and tendons. As a result, she walks on the side of her foot, rather than the sole. This has been her reality since early childhood.
Missed opportunities and temporary solutions
Clubfoot is typically diagnosed at birth, yet Martin Nelson’s became evident only at age six. This discovery drove her parents to seek medical solutions.
Under the careful observation of doctors at the Bustamente Children’s Hospital in Jamaica, it became evident that surgery was indispensable. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, this crucial step was never taken.
Instead, Martin Nelson had to wear special shoes, which provided some relief from pain.
As the years rolled on, the shoes’ effectiveness waned. With no financial means to access advanced medical solutions, Martin Nelson’s condition worsened, causing increased pain and swelling.
The year 2020, fraught with global challenges, also marked the birth of Martin Nelson’s son. But as joy entered her life, the pain from her condition intensified.
The subsequent years involved desperate searches for orthopedic aid. In 2022, though a specialist provided hope in the form of a Cam Walker shoe, this solution resulted in further complications, including severe blisters.
More than physical pain: Shawna’s spirit and resilience
For Martin Nelson, Clubfoot is not just a physical battle. Emotionally and spiritually, it is a mountain to climb daily.
As a devout Seventh-Day Adventist who recently renewed her faith in God, she often finds herself unable to attend church services because of her condition.
As it relates to work, she shared that there are days when the agony is so great that she is forced to work from home.
Work and worship, two pillars of her life, are often negatively impacted due to the intense discomfort. However, she is hopeful that God will provide the help she needs.
“There are days when the pain becomes unbearable, but I hold on to my faith, knowing that God is in control,” she said confidently.
She seeks solace in stories of others with disabilities, gospel music, bible stories, and inspiring quotes.
A beacon of hope from afar
Despite the countless setbacks, Martin Nelson remains relentless in her search for a solution.
Her faith in God prompted her and her husband to seek medical assistance outside of Jamaica. They received a ray of hope when the couple recently stumbled upon Cuba Heal Medical Tourism Inc.
Martin Nelson’s friends and family have since rallied around and on Monday launched a GoFundMe campaign aiming to raise $20,000 USD, covering surgery, treatments, and all associated medical expenses.

Dreams of a future without pain
The surgery promises a life where Martin Nelson can walk without pain, play with her son without hindrance, and experience the simple joys of wearing regular shoes, which she hopes can soon become a reality.
“After the surgery and full recovery, I want to engage more in my church, work, and even pursue further education,” she shares with hope.
Her husband, son, friends, family, and the church community provide an unyielding pillar of strength.
