Jamaica’s tourism minister champions ideas as catalysts for tourism innovation

In a recent event, Jamaica’s Tourism Minister, the Honorable Edmund Bartlett, emphasized the crucial role of innovative thinking in the evolution of the local hospitality industry.

During his speech at the Jamaica Centre for Tourism Innovation (JCTI) Career Expo 2024, held at the Montego Bay Convention Centre, Bartlett highlighted the importance of fresh ideas in fostering growth and introducing new developments within the sector.

The driving force of tourism

According to Minister Bartlett, the essence of tourism lies not in the monotony of repeating business activities, but in the dynamic changes and innovations that add value to the industry.

He pointed out that the future of tourism is heavily reliant on the capacity to innovate and adapt to emerging trends.

With an expected increase of 1.5 billion tourists traveling globally over the next 25 years, the need for creative product development to meet these trends is more pressing than ever.

A call to future innovators

Addressing attendees of the career expo, Bartlett outlined a vision of the future where innovation and strategic thinking lead the way.

He encouraged the new generation to become not just creators of novel processes but also to refine existing ones, enhancing their value and efficiency.

The minister’s message was clear: the path forward for Jamaica’s tourism sector is paved with opportunities for those ready to think outside the box and bring forth groundbreaking ideas.

The Economic Impact of Tourism Innovation

Highlighting the significant contributions of the tourism sector to the Jamaican economy, Bartlett shared that the value-added component of tourism was responsible for 11 per cent of the sector’s 2.9 per cent growth last year.

With an ambitious goal to generate US$5 billion in earnings by 2025, the minister expressed optimism about the potential of innovation to elevate the economic landscape of Jamaica.
