Maurice Foley, a prominent figure within Bermuda’s opposition One Bermuda Alliance (OBA), is urging the government to organize a referendum before committing to full membership in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).
Foley, who is contesting the St David’s Constituency 3 seat under the OBA banner, emphasizes the importance of public input in deciding Bermuda’s stance towards CARICOM.
He advocates for a democratic process to determine whether full membership aligns with the island’s goals, priorities, and ability to engage effectively within the regional framework.
Government’s intentions and consultation assurances
The David Burt administration has signaled its intention to pursue full membership in the 15-member regional integration body.
Acknowledging this, Bermuda has received authorization from Britain to initiate negotiations with CARICOM.
Despite assurances from Burt regarding extensive public consultation, the government has not confirmed whether a referendum will precede the decision on full CARICOM membership.
Foley, recently confirmed as the OBA candidate for the St David’s Constituency, stresses his dedication to representing the constituency and effecting positive change in constituents’ lives.
In addressing the political landscape, Foley opts for substantive discussions over personal attacks, highlighting the need for respectful dialogue.
The seat is currently held by Government backbencher Lovitta Foggo, who secured victory in the previous general election.
Evaluating leadership: Focus on policy and discourse
Acknowledging that there may be disagreements about Premier David Burt’s performance, Foley shared that he prefers to focus on policy evaluation rather than personal critique.
He emphasizes the importance of debating specific policies and approaches while maintaining civility in political discourse.
Foley’s approach underscores a commitment to fostering constructive dialogue throughout his campaign.
