TCI Human Rights Commission affirms high standards of detention facilities

The Human Rights Commission of the Turks and Caicos Islands has responded to claims made by some US delegates about the condition of the island’s prison and detention facilities.

Contrary to these assertions aired in general media, the Commission has reported no knowledge of any criticisms from the United Nations regarding sanctions or subpar standards at these facilities.

Upholding standards

The Commission affirms that the local facilities not only meet the minimum standards prescribed by the United Nations but often surpass them.

This stance is backed by detailed inspections and evaluations carried out from January to March 2024.

During this period, the Commission visited the Immigration Detention Center on Providenciales and His Majesty’s Prison on Grand Turk.

These visits included comprehensive reviews of the infrastructure, conditions, and management practices, along with interviews with detainees and inmates.

Continuous oversight

Despite some recommendations for improvement, the treatment of individuals and the availability of essential provisions like food and water consistently adhere to human rights norms.

The Turks and Caicos Islands Human Rights Commission has committed to maintaining regular quarterly inspections of all detention facilities throughout the fiscal year 2024 to 2025.

By the end of the year, it also plans to complete assessments of police stations on Providenciales and other outlying islands.
