The Trinidad & Tobago Coast Guard has confirmed the involvement of at least two vessels in the oil spill crisis currently affecting Tobago, the sister island of Trinidad.
Following examination of video footage and other information, the Ministry of National Security has disclosed that the vessels implicated in the incident are a tugboat and a barge.
Oil source traced
According to reports, the oil appeared to come from the wrecked barge, which was discovered lodged on a reef.
Coast Guard joins forces with local and regional agencies
In response to the crisis, the Coast Guard has mobilized efforts in conjunction with local and regional agencies to ascertain the owners of the vessels.
Vessels bound for Guyana fail to arrive
While tracing the vessels’ origins and intended destinations, it was established that they were en route to Guyana.
However, inquiries with Guyanese authorities have confirmed that neither vessel reached its anticipated destination.
