T&T police sounds alarm on surge in scams targeting online buyers

The Cyber and Social Media Unit (CSMU) of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) has recently highlighted a surge in scams affecting online shoppers, particularly on platforms like Facebook Marketplace.

This alert serves as a warning against the growing trend of orchestrated robberies that exploit such digital platforms, a phenomenon that is troublingly common not only in Trinidad and Tobago but globally.

Rising trend of digital dangers

Authorities have noted an alarming increase in the number of incidents where individuals advertising goods online have become victims of crime.

These criminals, often posing as potential buyers or sellers, lure victims under the pretense of purchasing items like electronics or vehicles.

What begins as seemingly normal transactions swiftly escalate into dangerous situations where assailants, upon meeting, reveal firearms and forcefully demand cash and valuables.

Deceptive practices and police response

The TTPS elaborated on the methods used by these fraudsters, which include the creation of fake Facebook and Instagram profiles.

These accounts often initiate contact through a female representative via WhatsApp, who then coordinates meetings at specific locations.

At these predetermined spots, victims find themselves confronted by multiple armed accomplices, leading to robbery.

In response to these incidents, the CSMU is actively involved in supporting ongoing investigations, aiming to crack down on such deceptive practices.

Precautionary measures and safe exchange zones

In light of these threats, the TTPS urges the public to practice heightened caution.

It advocates the use of designated ‘Safe Exchange Zones’ for completing transactions initiated online.

These zones, which include police stations and other well-lit locations equipped with CCTV, offer a more secure environment for exchanges.

The police stress the importance of avoiding transactions with individuals who resist meeting in these secure locations.

By adhering to these safety measures and remaining vigilant, the TTPS believes that the public can better protect themselves from the risks associated with online transactions and contribute to a safer community for all.
