MIAMI-DADE – The Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners today (January 22) passed on first reading County Commissioner Daniella Levine Cava’s item that would guarantee earned paid sick and family leave for employees of businesses who do work with the County.
Commissioner Levine Cava released the following statement:
“All hardworking employees deserve to have time to take care of their children, their aging parents, and themselves without the risk of losing a paycheck or their job. Nobody should have to choose between going to work sick to avoid loss of pay or dismissal or staying home to get the care they or family members need. This policy would improve the lives of many of our workers. It is a moral issue and a family issue.
“I am grateful to my colleagues who supported this item on its preliminary vote. I look forward to hearing from the public and my fellow Board members when this item is heard in the Health Care and County Operations committee on Thursday, Feb. 13, at 9:30 am. I am committed to working with my colleagues to address any concerns they may have about my proposal during the committee process.
“Thank you to the many faith-based leaders, labor unions, women’s organizations and nonprofit representatives who took the time to attend today’s Board meeting and to speak out in support of this legislation that is critical for workers in our county. Together, we will continue to advocate for our working families.”
