FWC halts boat with 25 Haitian migrants off Florida coast

Governor Ron DeSantis, in a move against potential migration surges, disclosed the interception of a boat carrying 25 Haitians along Florida’s coast.

The revelation unfolded during a press briefing held in Polk County on Friday, coinciding with the signing of three legislative measures aimed at curbing illegal immigration.

Interception of vessel and contraband seized

Reports from DeSantis outlined a recent operation conducted by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers near Sebastain Inlet.

The vessel, laden with 25 individuals from Haiti, was intercepted.

Notably, authorities uncovered illicit substances, firearms, and night vision equipment aboard the vessel, indicative of organized smuggling operations.

Deployment of law enforcement resources

DeSantis, underscoring the urgency of the situation, highlighted the deployment of over 250 law enforcement personnel to the Florida Keys.

This proactive measure seeks to thwart potential influxes of Haitian migrants amid escalating violence and instability within their homeland.

Escalating violence in Haiti

The announcement comes in the wake of intensified gang violence gripping Haiti, particularly in the aftermath of the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in 2021.

Gang incursions have gripped Port-au-Prince, rendering significant parts of the city under their control. Recent attacks have prompted mass displacements, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.

Multifaceted response efforts

The deployment to the Florida Keys encompasses a coordinated effort, drawing resources from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Florida National Guard, and Florida State Guard.

Additionally, the state plans to deploy aerial and maritime assets, including helicopters, seacraft, and drones, to bolster interception capabilities.

Governor’s imperative to safeguard Floridians

In justifying the enhanced measures, Governor DeSantis reiterated the imperative to safeguard Floridians amidst the unfolding crisis in Haiti.

He emphasized the collaborative efforts between Florida resources and the U.S. Coast Guard in intercepting vessels, citing significant interceptions since January 2023.

Legislative measures targeting illegal immigration

Among the legislative enactments endorsed by DeSantis, measures include stricter penalties for driving without a valid license, non-recognition of identifications issued to undocumented individuals from other states, and enhanced penalties for deported individuals re-entering the state to commit crimes.
