Jamaican woman celebrates 108th birthday as America’s second-oldest resident

Nesta Leeloo, a Jamaican-born centenarian, has added another remarkable milestone to her life as she celebrated her 108th birthday on January 6, surrounded by her expansive family and the South Florida community.

Affectionately called “Mama,” Ms. Leeloo is now the second-oldest living woman in the United States. America’s oldest resident is Naomi Whitehead, age 114. She was born in Georgia on September 26, 1910, and now resides in Greenville, Pennsylvania.

Nesta Leeloo was born in Mandeville, Jamaica, and moved to the U.S. after marrying. Her legacy now includes six children, 19 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, 23 great-great-grandchildren, and five great-great-great-grandchildren. She was one of 12 children.

In honor of her incredible journey, Tamarac Mayor Michelle J. Gomez declared January 6 as “Nesta Leeloo Day,” and Jamaican Consul General Oliver Mair joined the celebration at her Tamarac home to deliver birthday greetings as well as a proclamation. “Mama is a shining example of resilience, love, and family values,” Mair said.

Despite her age, Ms. Leeloo remains remarkably active. A former seamstress, she still hems pants for her daughters and occasionally plays the piano, a hobby that brings her great joy. While she recently started using a walker, her independence and zest for life are unwavering.

“I had a wonderful life, I had wonderful parents, could not ask for more,” she reflected during her birthday celebration. Her life philosophy, rooted in decency and respect for her upbringing, continues to inspire her family and community.

The celebration was filled with love and laughter, as Ms. Leeloo shared her favorite Jamaican dishes, like beef soup, and marveled at the generations of her family who gathered to honor her. “They are my life,” she shared, underscoring the deep bond she shares with her descendants.

Ms. Leeloo’s story is a powerful reminder of the strength found in family, tradition, and optimism. Her enduring legacy and vibrant spirit continue to touch the hearts of everyone who meets her, making every day with her a cherished gift.
