Man dies in apparent drowning in Fort Lauderdale’s New River, police investigating

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Police are investigating the death of a man in an apparent drowning in Fort Lauderdale’s New River early Saturday morning. Fort Lauderdale police responded to a call around 2:40 a.m. near Las Olas Boulevard and the Wharf after reports of a man calling for help from the water. A police spokesperson confirmed that multiple witnesses saw the man struggling, including a good Samaritan who jumped in to try to rescue him.

However, the rescuer lost sight of the man before he vanished beneath the surface. Investigators confirmed the man was pronounced dead at the scene. Divers continued their search and rescue efforts until around 5:30 a.m., when they recovered a body believed to be that of the man reported earlier.

Authorities said a medical examiner’s office in Broward County is working to confirm the man’s identity and determine how he ended up in the water.
