A woman who was shot in the head by a stranger in what is being investigated as an inexplicable fit of road rage on Interstate 595 is recovering and detectives with the Broward Sheriff’s Office Violent Crimes Unit (VCU) are seeking assistance from the public to locate the shooter.
According to reports, at approximately 7:51 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 10, Davie Police responded to a report of a shooting in the westbound lanes of Interstate 595 near Hiatus Road. Davie Fire Rescue also responded to the scene. The Florida Highway Patrol responded as well and requested assistance from the Broward Sheriff’s Office. BSO’s VCU and Crime Scene Unit took over the investigation.
The preliminary investigation reveals that Rondrica Davis was a passenger in a Ford Escape that was traveling in the westbound lanes of Interstate 595 in the far left lane when the driver of a black pickup truck approached them from the rear at a high rate of speed. The driver of the Escape attempted to allow the driver of the truck to pass, however, the driver of the truck eventually maneuvered in front of them. After slowing down and suddenly braking in front of the Escape, the driver of the truck got to the left of the Escape and fired at a shot at the car. Davis was struck by the gunfire.
Following the shooting, the driver of the truck sped off westbound. Paramedics transported Davis to Broward Health Medical Center where she was treated for her injuries and eventually released.
Rondrica and her husband Jeff were headed out on Friday night to celebrate their 20th anniversary when the incident occurred.
The couple says the driver was dressed in all black and unknown to them. “It’s like he came up behind us like he was praying [on] us, it’s almost like you [were] hunting an animal,” Rondrica told reporters.
The shooting left Jeff wondering if he would lose his wife forever. “Every time I close my eyes, all I can see is the gunshot and the bang, and how my wife was in the truck,” he said.
