Prime Minister Holness highlights Jamaica’s major 2024 achievements

Jamaica made significant strides in 2024, including reductions in serious crimes and notable economic gains, according to Prime Minister Dr. the Most Hon. Andrew Holness.

In his New Year’s Day message on January 1, Dr. Holness reported a 14 percent decrease in serious crimes and an 18 percent reduction in murders, marking the second consecutive year of decline. He attributed these achievements to sustained investments in equipment, personnel, intelligence, and leadership within the security forces.

“Our strategy of long-term investments in security is paying off,” the Prime Minister stated.

Record-breaking economic growth

Dr. Holness also highlighted Jamaica’s strong economic performance in 2024. He noted that unemployment fell to its lowest level in the country’s history, while inflation remained within the target range of 4 to 6 percent. Interest rates declined steadily, the Jamaican dollar remained stable, and the national debt-to-GDP ratio dropped below 70 percent—its lowest in over three decades.

“Our economic achievements reflect prudent management and resilience,” he said.

Infrastructure and social programs

Dr. Holness described the country’s ongoing infrastructure program as unparalleled, encompassing highway construction, water supply, broadband expansion, parks, housing, healthcare facilities, police stations, fire stations, and urban developments.

The Prime Minister also pointed to a 30 percent increase in resources allocated to social safety net programs, aimed at supporting the most vulnerable. He highlighted the doubling of the minimum wage, an increased income tax threshold, the first-ever reverse tax credit, and a $200 billion boost in public sector wages.

“These achievements are phenomenal and incontestable,” he emphasized.

Building on these successes, Dr. Holness vowed to address challenges expressed by citizens and continue writing “the next chapter in Jamaica’s prosperity story” in 2025.

“Our focus remains on sustaining progress and ensuring prosperity for all Jamaicans,” he added.
