St. Kitts and Nevis announces major increase in education budget

The government of St. Kitts and Nevis has announced a record-breaking increase in its national budget allocation for education, reaffirming its commitment to accessible and equitable learning opportunities.

The 2025 education budget has surged to EC $120 million, a significant rise from EC $97 million in 2024 and EC $93 million in 2023. This landmark investment underscores the government’s dedication to empowering the nation’s youth through education.

Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew highlighted the initiative during the RoundTable on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, emphasizing the government’s prioritization of education as a cornerstone of national development. “Secondary education is free. College education is free. Preschool is free for some and heavily subsidized for others. St. Kitts and Nevis can boast that education is accessible for our young people,” Dr. Drew said.

New education initiatives

The increased funding will enhance existing programs and introduce new initiatives aimed at bolstering educational outcomes and economic empowerment. Key measures include expanded financial assistance for tertiary education, supported by the St. Kitts and Nevis Development Bank. This assistance aims to ensure that higher education remains within reach for citizens and residents alike.

In addition to education, the government is linking learning with entrepreneurship through innovative programs. The Small Business Facility, funded by the central government and administered through the Development Bank, offers financial resources and opportunities to aspiring entrepreneurs. “We are expanding small businesses so that more of our people can have access,” Dr. Drew noted, adding that the initiative has already benefited many and will continue to create avenues for success.

Another transformative program is the ASPIRE initiative, launched in November 2024, which focuses on financial literacy for young people. The program equips participants with critical skills in money management, budgeting, and wealth-building while providing them with opportunities to invest in local companies. “Even before they leave school, they are accumulating wealth with the education that goes with it,” Dr. Drew explained. The program, unique to St. Kitts and Nevis, is expected to benefit over 10.5 million young people.

Prime Minister Drew emphasized that these investments are part of a broader vision for a future where education and entrepreneurship empower every citizen. The government’s efforts are paving the way for a more educated, financially literate, and economically resilient nation, ensuring that every individual has the tools to thrive.
