Kingston, Jamaica – While British media swirl with reports that Mason Greenwood is poised to switch his international allegiance from England to Jamaica, the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) is tempering the excitement.
General Secretary Dennis Chung has clarified that the path for Greenwood to don the Reggae Boyz jersey is far from clear, with bureaucratic hurdles still unresolved.
‘Not as simple as signing a paper,’ says Chung
Chung directly addressed claims from English outlets, including the Daily Star, which suggested Greenwood’s eligibility for Jamaica could be finalized with a single signature from a family member.
“It is the same situation. Nothing has changed,” Chung stated emphatically to the Daily Gleaner.
He elaborated that the process involves rectifying technical documentation, an issue compounded by complexities from earlier times.
“Back in the old days, some people usually had two birth certificates and things like that. We have to sort out all those things. But nothing has changed. We are basically waiting on a document. That is all we are waiting on, but we have been waiting on that for a little while and there is still no timeline on when that documentation will be completed.”
Mason Greenwood’s eligibility and journey
The 23-year-old striker, currently Ligue 1’s top scorer with 12 goals for Marseille, qualifies for Jamaica through his father, who was born on the island. Greenwood’s lone England cap came at the age of 18, making him eligible to switch allegiances under FIFA rules.
Greenwood’s career trajectory has been tumultuous. Once heralded as England’s future No. 9, he was sidelined by the Football Association (FA) in 2020 amid charges of attempted rape, assault, and controlling behavior. Although the Crown Prosecution Service later dropped the charges, the FA made it clear Greenwood would not be reconsidered for the Three Lions, citing potential reputational risks.
After a £27 million move from Manchester United to Marseille last summer, Greenwood has revitalized his career, emerging as a key figure in France’s top tier. Despite these successes, his potential debut for Jamaica is not imminent, with JFF officials confirming ongoing delays.
British media reports versus reality
British outlets have portrayed Mason Greenwood’s transition to Jamaica as imminent, even suggesting he could feature in World Cup qualifiers this June under Steve McClaren’s leadership. However, Chung refuted these claims, emphasizing the unresolved status of key documentation.
Marseille is reportedly reluctant to release Greenwood for Jamaica’s upcoming friendlies, but speculation persists that he could play a role in crucial qualifiers later in the year.
Greenwood’s prolific performance in Ligue 1 has drawn renewed attention to his footballing prowess. Once viewed as a successor to Harry Kane, he now represents a tantalizing prospect for Jamaica’s national team. However, Chung’s comments make it clear that the young forward’s Reggae Boyz debut remains contingent on overcoming administrative hurdles.
